Bio
In 1987 Phillip Moffitt walked away from his highly successful post as chief executive and editor-in-chief of Esquire magazine to devote himself to exploring the inner life full time. He subsequently was ordained as a lay priest in the Theravada Buddhist tradition through Spirit Rock Meditation Center in Northern California, where he is now a member of the Teachers Council.
In addition to teaching at Spirit Rock and at retreat centers throughout the U.S., he also leads a weekly vipassana meditation group in Marin County, California.
In 1991 Phillip founded the
Life Balance Institute, a non-profit organization devoted to the study and practice of spiritual values in daily life. He has guided hundreds of individuals through a process of strategic self-analysis to understanding how to live more skillfully.
During his tenure as editor-in-chief of Esquire, Phillip wrote a monthly essay in the magazine examining life issues of importance to baby boomers. And from 1998 until 2005, Phillip wrote a bi-monthly “Dharma Wisdom” column for Yoga Journal. Many of these articles have been used in seminary and university psychology courses.
