Teaching of the Week #43

Teaching 43: How to Practice Abandoning Clinging

[When a strong desire arises] start to look for signs indicating that you are caught in clinging. Ask yourself if this clinging is suffering or not suffering. Can you separate the desire itself from the clinging to have the desire fulfilled? Once your mind has made these distinctions, begin to note that your awareness of the clinging is separate from the actual clinging. Once you can begin to make this distinction with some ease, you can start to invite the mind to let loose of clinging.

For your reflection: The above teaching is the key step in realizing the 2nd Noble Truth. Reflect on each of the instructions until you have a rudimentary understanding of them. Then look for opportunities to do each of these steps around a really strong desire in which there is clinging. Oftentimes you will not be able to let loose of the clinging, but when you are able to, make sure to acknowledge to yourself that you have done so.
