Teaching of the Week #30

Teaching #30: Why Do You Suffer?

In the Fourth Insight, the Buddha states what when the mind starts craving, suffering will inevitably arise. In other words, it is how you relate to desire that is the cause of suffering. Therefore you are not helpless or cursed or destined to be forever tormented with anxiety, stress, and dissatisfaction. You can do something about it: You can move toward freeing your mind.

Chapter 9, Pg 79

For your reflection: This week practice making the distinction between feelings of desire and grasping. Can you feel the difference in your body in one versus the other? Notice that you can desire something without your mind tightening, but the moment you start to think you must have it the mind begins to contract.
