Teaching #26: Willingness to "Stand Under" Suffering

 

Ajahn Sumedho teaches that to understand dukkha you must be willing to “stand under” suffering. Similarly, Jungian psychologist Helen Luke said you must be willing to receive suffering in the manner of “standing under a waterfall.” Both of these descriptions point to the capacity of fully, consciously receiving life as it is.

For your reflection: When you hear about a tragedy, can you stay present and accept that this too is part of life? Can you keep your heart open in this manner without becoming emotionally reactive?
